A Tanc
We think the title just means a dance tune. It was noted down in 1913 and the musician who was the informant came from Kremenets.
There’s nothing to tell you how to play it so we worked out our own arrangement. It has a B flat and doesn’t really seem to change key much unlike a lot of klezmer which never sticks to one key. But it’s intriguingly twisty. What I like about it is that the tune goes in one direction but then turns back and goes in another. There is nothing predictable or obvious about the melody. By the time we’d played it a few times the dance rhythm emerged and was a lot more apparent. We plan to play it in public tomorrow, from memory.
